Vermont Divorce Laws

According to the CDC National Survey of Family Growth in 2012, Vermont had the 5th highest divorce rate in the country. It's not an easy place to get a divorce either. You or your spouse must have lived in the state for 6 months prior to filing and you have to wait 1 year before your divorce is finalized. The state permits divorce based on "fault" or "no fault". Pursuing a fault-based divorce means you have to prove one of the following grounds: intolerable severity, incurable insanity, desertion by the other person for at least 7 years, adultery, incarceration for more than 3 years or refusal to provide suitable financial maintenance despite the ability to do so.
