Connecticut Divorce Laws

To get divorced in Connecticut at least one spouse must have lived in the state for the year preceding the date of the filing before the court can grant a "dissolution". The process than takes about 4 months unless there are extenuating circumstances. When children are involved, the state mandates a court-approved parenting education program be taken by each parent (Conn. Gen. Stats. ยง46b-69b). The court is aware that even under the best cooperative situation possible, separation is difficult on the kids. These classes educate parents on the impact of divorce on children, dispute resolution and conflict management, guidelines for custody, stress management techniques and cooperative parenting skills. The purpose is to teach caregivers how to help their children adjust to the change in a healthy way. Connecticut doesn't have a set age when a child can choose which parent he/she would like to live with. The court will take into consideration the child's preference but are not bound to that choice.

Connecticut Customer Review

"I have to admit I was skeptical about taking a parenting class when I've already raised 4 children but I had to do it because our youngest in only 10. The program was engaging, easy to get through and reminded me that I had fallen into some bad habits. I'm now working at changing my behavior and especially how I communicate with his dad in front of him. It was the best 6 hours of learning I've had in many years!" Julia S.- Waterbury, CT
